The OPGC is the recipient of a University project to demonstrate sustainable management practices. Spurred by a freshman student, Alec Janda, and supported by a grant from the Ohio State's Energy Services and Sustainability program, a rainwater catchment system was installed in the OPGC grounds. This sytems collects rainwater from the OPGC and Horticulture greenhouses and stores it in large bladders. A 2-inch rain yields approximately 10,000 gallons of purified water that can be used to irrigate the OPGC plants in the nursery area that include plants grown in containers and in raised beds. This capture systems further enhances the sustainability efforts at the OPGC that include a rain garden to slow-down and capture some of the runnof generated from irrigation of the nursery area.
