The Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center (OPGC) participated in Community Day at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens on June 7, 2026. Community Days are held on the first Sunday of each month and provide free general admission to residents of Columbus and Franklin County.
The theme for June's event was Sustainable Columbus, highlighting organizations and initiatives that promote environmental stewardship, conservation, and sustainable practices throughout the community.
OPGC staff engaged visitors through educational displays, flower crafts, and discussions about the conservation of ornamental plant genetic resources. Attendees learned about the role of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System, the importance of preserving plant diversity, and how germplasm collections support research, breeding, and conservation efforts.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to connect with the public, increase awareness of OPGC's mission, and share the importance of conserving plant genetic resources for future generations.
