The Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center (OPGC) has initiated a new native plant exploration project supported by a USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Plant Exploration Grant. The project aims to document and conserve the genetic diversity of Ohio's native herbaceous ornamental plants for long-term preservation within the USDA National Plant Germplasm System.
The first scouting trip was conducted on June 15, 2026, in natural areas southwest of Toledo, Ohio. During the visit, populations of native herbaceous ornamentals were evaluated for future germplasm collection opportunities, with particular attention given to OPGC priority genera: Coreopsis, Lilium, Phlox, and Rudbeckia.
Information gathered during these surveys will help guide future collection efforts across Ohio. Germplasm acquired through the project will be preserved and made available to support research, conservation, education, and horticultural development.
Additional scouting and collection trips are planned throughout the 2026 growing season.
