Flower Seed X-rays - Added 2004-09-03The OPGC recently purchased an X-ray machine to aide in germination testing. We can now x-ray seeds and tell whether they have an embryo which will germinate or not. HortScience July 2004 Publications - Added 2004-06-01The abstracts of some of the OPGC Staff were published in Volume 39, Number 4 of the American Society for Horticultural Science, July 2004. The volume contains the program and abstracts for the ASHS Annuawl Conference in Austin, Texas
Plant Genetic Resources Published Article - Added 2004-04-20The OPGC was recently featured on the cover of the Plant Genetic Resources Newsletter of March, 2004. Inside is also an article co-written by our Dr. David Tay. OPGC Receives Published Recognition - Added 2004-03-21The OPGC has received published recognition in the 2003 annual report of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) as well as in a special Technology Partnership Practice (Battelle Memorial Institute) Report. The Batelle report cites the OPGC as being "among the most prominent of the new and emerging scientific initiatives".
Book: Begonia Description - Added 2004-02-26The OPGC recently received two copies of the Begonia Description and Use of the Begonia Keys: Second Edition, by Jack Golding and Bill Claybough of the American Begonia Society. We have found it to be a good reference and thought we would endorse it. It sells for $20, and can be ordered from Bill Claybaugh at absastro at hotmail.com.OPGC Facilities Addition - Added 2004-02-02The tissue culture growing room (7' X 22') is located in Howlett Hall. Currently we are awaiting the installation of the new independent heating/cooling unit. That work will commence on February 2, 2004. As soon as this work is completed we will begin installation of shelving and lighting for the in vitro cultures. Then this will be a working tissue culture laboratory for the OPGC.Governers Wife - Added 2004-02-01David Tay and Art Wells met Hope Taft (Ohio's First Lady) at the Master Gardener Recognition Banquet. They discussing plant conservation with her.OSU Nursery Short Course & Trade Show - Added 2004-01-29On January 26-28, 2004 Dr. David Tay, Susan Stieve, Jennifer Ehrenberger, Art Wells, and Eric Renze attended the OSU Nursery Short Course and Central Environmental Nursery Trade Show "CENTS" at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. We attended helpful horticultural seminars, visited with some colleagues, and did some networking where we introduced and informed people about our facility. We were able to get some germplasm donations, and spoke with people who would contribute plant material to our cause in the future.Staff Additions - Added 2004-01-22Jennifer Ehrenberger is a new curator (hired January 5, 2004) for the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center (OPGC) at The Ohio State University. Here she will be responsible for conserving heirloom and open-pollinated varieties of ornamental plants for future generations (see also priority genera). Her work will specialize in vegetatively propagated species including in vitro collections and eventually cryopreservation of ornamental plants. She will also be working in coordination with the seed propagated species curator Susan Stieve to manage the collections. Jennifer attended Penn State University for bachelors' degree and University of Hawaii at Manoa for the completion of her master's degree.Arthur A. Wells is the new research assistant (hired September 23, 2003) for the in vitro collections. He attended OSU and received his bachelors' degree in Horticulture and Crop Science.
